Once you have decided to build a mobile app, the next question is which platform. Android, iOS, or both? And should both be built separately or with one cross-platform codebase? The answer affects your budget, timeline and who can use your app. Here is how to decide for a Kenyan audience.

Which platforms do Kenyan users have?

Android phones dominate the Kenyan market across price ranges, from entry-level devices to flagships, while iPhones are concentrated among higher-income and some corporate users. That means a consumer app aimed at the general public usually reaches most of its audience on Android. Your own audience may differ, so check your website analytics: the device report shows which operating systems your visitors actually use.

What are the options?

Native Android

Built specifically for Android using Kotlin or Java. Full access to device features and strong performance, but it only runs on Android.

Native iOS

Built specifically for iPhone using Swift. Excellent performance and integration with Apple features, but only for iOS.

Cross-platform

One codebase that produces apps for both Android and iOS, using frameworks such as Flutter or React Native. Most business apps work very well this way.

Progressive web app

A web app that can be installed on the home screen from the browser, without the app stores. Lower cost, instant updates, more limited device access.

When should you choose cross-platform?

  • You need both Android and iOS within a reasonable budget.
  • Your app is a typical business app: catalogues, bookings, orders, accounts, payments, notifications.
  • You want one team and one codebase to maintain.

For most Kenyan SMEs, cross-platform is the practical default.

When does native make sense?

  • Your app relies heavily on device features such as advanced camera processing, Bluetooth hardware or background location.
  • Performance is critical, for example games or real-time media.
  • You are building for one platform only and want the best possible experience on it.

Should you launch on one platform first?

Launching on Android first is common in Kenya because it reaches the largest audience. With a cross-platform framework you can still release iOS shortly after with modest extra effort, mostly testing and store submission. If your audience is mainly corporate or premium, check your analytics before deciding, because iPhone use may be higher than average.

What about app store requirements?

Both stores require developer accounts, privacy policies, accurate listings and compliance with their rules. Apple's review is generally stricter and can take longer. Plan time for both, and make sure the developer accounts are registered in your business's name.

Do M-Pesa and local features work on every platform?

Yes. M-Pesa STK Push, SMS verification and local payment flows work the same way on Android and iOS, because the payment happens through Safaricom's systems and the customer's phone prompt. The integration is built on your backend, not tied to one platform.

How should you test an app for Kenyan users?

Test on the phones your customers actually use, not only on the latest flagship. Include an entry-level Android device with limited memory, older Android versions still common in the market, small screens and slow or unstable mobile data. Check how the app behaves when a network request fails mid-payment, and make sure text remains readable with larger font settings. These conditions reveal the problems real users would otherwise find for you.

Example: choosing a platform for a gym app

A Nairobi gym wants members to book classes, pay with M-Pesa and receive reminders. Its website analytics show most visitors on Android but a meaningful iPhone group among corporate members. A cross-platform Flutter app covers both from one codebase, with the booking engine and M-Pesa integration on a shared backend that also powers the gym's website. One team maintains everything.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I build my app for Android or iPhone first in Kenya?

For most consumer apps, Android first reaches the largest audience. Check your own analytics, since some audiences have higher iPhone use.

Is Flutter good for business apps?

Yes. Flutter produces fast Android and iOS apps from one codebase and suits most business apps such as bookings, ordering and account management.

Is a cross-platform app slower than a native app?

For typical business apps the difference is rarely noticeable. Native development matters mainly for performance-critical or hardware-heavy apps.

Can a progressive web app replace a native app?

For many content, booking and ordering use cases, yes. Apps needing deep device features or app store presence still need native or cross-platform builds.
