Changing Your Domain Name Without Losing SEO: Blessedave Technologies guide cover

Businesses change domains for many reasons: a rebrand, moving from a .co.ke to a .com address for international reach, merging websites or replacing a domain that was registered in someone else's name. A domain change is one of the riskiest SEO moves, because years of rankings and links are attached to the old address. Done carefully, though, most of that value transfers to the new domain.

Why is a domain change risky?

Search engines treat the new domain as a different website until signals show it has replaced the old one. Without proper redirects, old links lead to errors, rankings drop and customers using bookmarks or old business cards end up nowhere. Email can break too if it shares the domain.

Should you change domain and redesign at the same time?

Avoid it if possible. Changing domain, design, URL structure and content at once makes it hard to diagnose problems. If you must do both, keep URLs and key content as stable as possible and plan redirects meticulously.

Step by step: changing domains safely

  1. Register and secure the new domain in your company's name, and keep the old domain registered.
  2. List every old URL from your sitemap, Search Console, analytics and backlink reports.
  3. Map each old URL to the matching URL on the new domain.
  4. Set up 301 redirects page by page from the old domain to the new one, not everything to the home page.
  5. Verify both domains in Google Search Console.
  6. Use the change of address tool in Search Console after redirects are live.
  7. Update internal links, canonical tags, structured data and sitemaps to the new domain.
  8. Update external profiles: Google Business Profile, social media, directories and partner links.
  9. Plan email migration so no messages are lost, and keep old addresses forwarding.
  10. Monitor traffic, rankings, crawl errors and enquiries daily at first, then weekly.

What should the redirect map look like?

Old URLNew URL
oldbrand.co.ke/newbrand.com/
oldbrand.co.ke/services/web-designnewbrand.com/services/web-design
oldbrand.co.ke/blog/website-cost-kenyanewbrand.com/blog/website-cost-kenya
oldbrand.co.ke/old-promo-2023newbrand.com/services (closest relevant page)

Each redirect should be a single hop. Avoid chains where an old URL redirects to another redirect. Read more in redesigning without losing rankings.

How long should redirects stay in place?

As long as possible, ideally permanently. Keep the old domain registered and redirecting for years, because links, bookmarks and printed materials will keep pointing to it. Letting the old domain expire throws away its value and may allow someone else to register it.

What results should you expect?

A temporary dip in traffic is common while search engines process the change. With correct redirects and the change of address submitted, rankings usually recover over the following weeks to months. Sustained drops typically point to missing redirects, redirect chains, blocked pages or content changes.

What should you check after the move?

  • Spot-check old URLs, including blog posts and images, to confirm they redirect correctly.
  • Watch Search Console for 404 errors and indexing changes on both domains.
  • Confirm forms, payments and tracking work on the new domain.
  • Check that email is sending and receiving correctly.
  • Update Google Ads and analytics settings to the new domain.

Common domain change mistakes

  • Redirecting every old page to the new home page.
  • Letting the old domain expire.
  • Forgetting image and PDF URLs that receive links.
  • Not updating Google Business Profile and social links.
  • Breaking email during the switch.

How should you announce the change to customers?

Tell customers before and after the move: a short notice on the old site, an email to your list, updates on social media and a note in email signatures. Update printed materials, vehicles and signage as you reprint them. Customers who know about the change are less likely to be confused by a new address or think they have reached the wrong business.

Example: a rebrand with a new domain

A company rebranded and moved from its old .co.ke domain to a new .com. It kept the same page structure, mapped every old URL including blog posts and PDFs, set up page-to-page 301 redirects, submitted the change of address in Search Console and updated its Business Profile and directory listings the same day. After a short dip, organic traffic recovered to its previous level within a few months.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Will changing my domain hurt my SEO?

There is usually a temporary dip, but with page-to-page 301 redirects and Search Console's change of address tool, rankings generally recover.

How long should I keep the old domain?

Keep it registered and redirecting for as long as possible, ideally permanently.

Should I redirect all old pages to the new home page?

No. Redirect each old page to its closest equivalent on the new domain to preserve relevance and rankings.

Can I move from .co.ke to .com without losing rankings?

Yes, if you map and redirect every URL, submit the change of address and update links and listings carefully.
