Performance Max vs Standard Shopping Campaigns for Online Stores: Blessedave Technologies guide cover
On this page

When you are ready to advertise products on Google, you will usually choose between two campaign types: Standard Shopping and Performance Max. Both use the product data in your Merchant Center feed, where Shopping ads are supported, but they work very differently. Choosing the right one depends on your data, budget and how much control you want.

What is a Standard Shopping campaign?

Standard Shopping shows your products as Shopping ads in Google's shopping placements. You can organise products into groups, set bids or use automated bidding, see the search terms that triggered your ads and exclude irrelevant ones. It offers clear, product-level reporting.

What is Performance Max?

Performance Max is a goal-based campaign that uses Google's automation to find customers across all of Google's channels: Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. You provide your product feed, creative assets such as images, headlines and videos, a budget and a conversion goal. Google decides where and when to show ads.

When should you choose Standard Shopping?

  • You are new to Google Ads and want to learn what sells.
  • Your conversion tracking is new or has few recorded sales.
  • You need tight control over which products get budget.
  • You want detailed search term data to refine product titles and pages.

When should you choose Performance Max?

  • Conversion tracking is reliable and records sales with values.
  • You have a steady volume of sales for the automation to learn from.
  • You want reach beyond Shopping, such as YouTube and Display, without managing several campaigns.
  • You can provide good images, headlines and ideally short videos.

Why does conversion tracking matter so much?

Both campaign types rely on knowing which clicks became sales. Performance Max especially depends on accurate conversion data because its automation optimises towards it. Before launching either, confirm that purchases, including M-Pesa payments completed through your checkout, are recorded as conversions with their values. Without this, the campaign optimises blindly.

Can you run both?

Yes, but plan carefully, because they can compete for the same products. A common approach is to start with Standard Shopping, learn which products and searches work, then test Performance Max on a defined set of products while monitoring overall results.

How should you set budgets?

Base budgets on your margins and target cost per sale. Start modestly, give campaigns time to gather data, and judge them on profit rather than clicks or impressions. Scale what works and fix or pause what does not.

What should you check before launching?

  • Shopping ads are supported in your target country.
  • Your Merchant Center feed is approved and accurate.
  • Conversion tracking records purchases and values.
  • Product pages load fast and checkout works well on mobile.
  • You have decided which products to promote first.

What creative assets does Performance Max need?

Beyond the product feed, Performance Max works best with a full set of assets: several landscape and square images, your logo, short and long headlines, descriptions and ideally a short video. Google combines these into ads for different placements. Use real photos of your products and store, keep claims accurate, and make headlines specific, such as delivery areas or payment options like M-Pesa. If you do not provide a video, Google may generate one automatically from your images, which rarely looks as good as a simple video you make yourself.

Example: a phased approach

A new electronics store starts with a Standard Shopping campaign on its fifty best sellers. After a few months of recorded sales, it knows which products are profitable and which search terms convert. It then launches Performance Max for its top categories with strong product images and a short video, watching overall return on ad spend to make sure the new campaign adds sales rather than simply taking them from Standard Shopping.
