Schema Markup Explained: Structured Data for Rich Results and AI Answers
On this page
When you read a web page, you instantly understand that a number is a phone number or that a block of text is a review. Search engines and AI systems have to work harder to infer that. Schema markup removes the guesswork by labelling your content in a format machines understand. It is one of the most effective technical improvements for both SEO and answer engine optimisation.
What is schema markup?
Schema markup is a shared vocabulary, maintained at schema.org, for describing things on the web: organisations, local businesses, services, products, articles, events, FAQs and more. Developers add it to pages as structured data, most commonly in a format called JSON-LD, which sits in the page code without changing what visitors see.
Why does schema markup matter?
- Rich results: it can make your pages eligible for enhanced search results such as breadcrumbs, product prices, ratings and article details.
- Better understanding: it confirms facts such as your business name, location, services and contact details.
- AI answers: AI assistants and Google's AI features rely on clear, structured facts. Schema makes your information easier to extract accurately.
- Entity building: consistent schema across your site and profiles helps search engines connect everything about your brand.
Which schema types do business websites need?
| Schema type | Where to use it | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Organization or LocalBusiness | Site-wide, usually the home page | Name, logo, address, phone, opening hours, social profiles |
| WebSite | Home page | The site itself and its search function |
| Service | Each service page | The service, provider and area served |
| Article or BlogPosting | Blog posts | Headline, author, dates, image |
| FAQPage | Pages with genuine FAQs | Questions and answers |
| BreadcrumbList | All inner pages | The page's position in the site |
| Product | Online store product pages | Name, price in KES, availability, reviews |
What does schema markup look like?
A simplified LocalBusiness example in JSON-LD:
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "LocalBusiness",
"name": "Example Business",
"telephone": "+254 700 000 000",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "Example Street",
"addressLocality": "Nairobi",
"addressCountry": "KE"
},
"url": "https://example.co.ke"
}
In practice, schema should be generated automatically by your website from the same data shown on the page, so it never drifts out of date.
What are the rules for using schema?
- Only mark up what is visible. Schema must describe content that is actually on the page.
- Keep it accurate. Prices, hours and addresses must match the page and your Google Business Profile.
- Do not fake reviews or ratings. Self-written reviews marked up as ratings break Google's guidelines.
- Use the most specific type. For example, a more specific LocalBusiness subtype where one fits your business.
How do you add schema to your website?
- Built into the site: the best approach. Templates output schema automatically for every service, article and FAQ.
- SEO plugins: WordPress plugins can add basic Organization, Article and Breadcrumb schema.
- Manual JSON-LD: suitable for small sites, but easy to forget to update.
How do you test schema markup?
Use Google's Rich Results Test to check whether a page is eligible for rich results, and the Schema Markup Validator to check general validity. In Google Search Console, the Enhancements reports show schema errors across the whole site.
How does schema help with AI search?
AI assistants assemble answers from many sources. When your site states facts clearly, in visible text and in structured data, there is less room for the AI to misunderstand or omit you. Schema is not a magic switch for AI visibility, but it is part of making your business easy to understand. Combine it with direct answers and FAQs, as explained in our guide to AEO.
Which schema should you add first?
If your site has no structured data today, add it in this order: Organization or LocalBusiness on the home page with your exact name, address, phone and logo; BreadcrumbList across inner pages; Service on each service page; Article on blog posts; then FAQPage wherever you show real questions and answers. Online stores should add Product schema to their best-selling products early, because it can show price and availability directly in results.
Common schema mistakes
- Different business names or phone numbers in schema and on the page.
- FAQ schema on pages without visible FAQs.
- Copying schema from another site without updating it.
- Leaving out schema on service pages, where it matters most.
