Technical SEO Checklist for Business Websites

Technical SEO Checklist for Business Websites: Blessedave Technologies guide cover
On this page

Technical SEO is the foundation under everything else. You can write excellent content and earn great links, but if search engines cannot crawl, render or understand your pages, they will not rank. This checklist covers the technical areas that most often hold business websites back.

What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO covers how your website is built and served rather than what it says: crawlability, indexing, speed, mobile usability, security, URL structure and structured data. Most issues are invisible to visitors, which is why they go unnoticed for months.

Crawling and indexing

  • robots.txt allows search engines to crawl your important pages and blocks only admin or private areas.
  • No accidental noindex. Staging settings left on after launch are a common cause of sudden traffic loss.
  • XML sitemap lists every page you want indexed, with accurate last-modified dates, and is submitted in Google Search Console.
  • Index coverage: in Search Console, review pages that are "crawled but not indexed" or "discovered but not indexed". They often point to thin or duplicate content.
  • Orphan pages: every important page should be linked from at least one other page.

URLs, redirects and canonicals

  • One version of the site: HTTPS, with or without www, and a consistent trailing-slash rule. Others redirect to it.
  • Readable URLs such as /services/seo-aeo-services.
  • Redirects are 301s and go straight to the final page, without chains of several hops.
  • Every page declares a canonical URL, usually itself, so duplicate versions such as tracking parameters are consolidated.
  • Broken links are fixed or redirected, and the 404 page returns a genuine 404 status.

Speed and Core Web Vitals

Google measures real-user experience with Core Web Vitals: how quickly the main content appears (LCP), how quickly the page responds to taps (INP) and how stable the layout is while loading (CLS). Improve them by:

  • Compressing images and serving modern formats such as WebP, at the size they are displayed.
  • Reducing heavy JavaScript, page builders and unused plugins.
  • Using caching and a CDN.
  • Reserving space for images and embeds so content does not jump.
  • Choosing hosting with enough resources for your traffic.

Read why website speed costs you more than you think for the business case.

Mobile usability

Google indexes the mobile version of your site. Check that text is readable without zooming, buttons are large enough to tap, content is the same on mobile and desktop, and nothing important is hidden behind pop-ups.

Security

  • HTTPS on every page, with no mixed-content warnings.
  • Software, themes and plugins kept up to date.
  • Security headers configured on the server.

Structured data

Structured data, usually JSON-LD using schema.org, tells search engines and AI systems what your content is: an organisation, a local business, a service, an article, an FAQ or a breadcrumb trail. Validate it with Google's Rich Results Test and fix errors. It helps your pages appear with richer results and gives AI assistants reliable facts about your business.

  • Duplicate titles and meta descriptions across pages.
  • Several pages targeting the same keyword, which causes cannibalisation.
  • Thin pages with very little unique content.
  • Missing H1 headings, or several H1s on one page.
  • Images without alt text.

How do you prioritise technical SEO fixes?

An audit can produce a long list. Work through it in this order:

  1. Blockers: anything stopping important pages being crawled or indexed, such as noindex tags, robots.txt blocks, server errors or pages returning the wrong status code.
  2. Lost value: broken redirects, redirect chains and 404 errors on pages that have backlinks or used to receive traffic.
  3. Duplicates: missing canonicals, duplicate titles and pages competing for the same keyword.
  4. Experience: slow templates, layout shifts and mobile usability problems on your most visited pages.
  5. Enhancements: structured data, internal links to orphan pages, image alt text.

Fix templates rather than individual pages wherever possible. One change to a service-page template can fix the same issue on every service page at once.

How often should you run a technical SEO audit?

Run a full audit before and after any redesign or migration, and a lighter check every month: review Search Console for new errors, crawl the site for broken links and confirm key pages are still indexed. Websites change constantly, and small issues accumulate.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between technical SEO and on-page SEO?

Technical SEO is about how the site is built and served: crawling, indexing, speed and structure. On-page SEO is about the content of each page: titles, headings, copy and internal links.

Can technical SEO issues cause a traffic drop?

Yes. Accidental noindex tags, broken redirects after a redesign and blocked pages in robots.txt are common causes of sudden drops.

Do I need structured data on my website?

It is not required, but it helps search engines and AI assistants understand your business and can enable richer search results.

How do I check if my pages are indexed?

Use the Pages report and URL inspection tool in Google Search Console to see which pages are indexed and why others are not.
