How to Run a Basic SEO Audit of Your Website in One Hour
On this page
A full professional SEO audit can take days. But the biggest problems on most business websites can be spotted in an hour with free tools. This audit is designed for business owners and managers, not technical specialists. Set a timer, work through each block and note what you find.
Minutes 0 to 10: Is Google indexing your site?
- Search Google for
site:yourdomain.co.ke. Roughly how many pages appear? Are your main service pages among them? - If you have Google Search Console, open the Pages report. Note the number of indexed pages and the top reasons pages are not indexed.
- Check for pages you did not expect, such as test pages, old campaign pages or duplicate versions.
Red flags: service pages missing from the results, a sudden drop in indexed pages, or staging and test pages appearing in search.
Minutes 10 to 20: Titles and descriptions
Look at how your pages appear in the site: results. Each should have a unique, descriptive title that names the service and, where relevant, the location. Look for repeated titles such as "Home" or your business name alone, titles cut off mid-word and descriptions that do not explain what the page offers.
Minutes 20 to 30: Speed and mobile
- Run your home page and your most important service page through Google PageSpeed Insights.
- Note the mobile Core Web Vitals assessment and the top suggested fixes. Large images are the most common culprit.
- Open the site on your own phone over mobile data. Is it easy to read, tap and find your phone number?
Minutes 30 to 40: Content and service pages
- Does each main service have its own page?
- Does each service page explain what is included, how it works, pricing guidance and FAQs?
- Is there a clear call to action on every page?
- Do two pages target the same topic? If so, they may be competing with each other.
- When did you last publish or update content?
Minutes 40 to 50: Local SEO
- Search for your business name on Google and Google Maps. Does your Business Profile appear?
- Check that the name, address, phone number, hours, website and categories are correct and match your website exactly.
- Look at your reviews: how many, how recent and have you responded?
- Search for your main service plus your town. Where do you appear compared with competitors?
Minutes 50 to 60: Structured data and AI readiness
- Paste a service page into Google's Rich Results Test. Is any structured data detected? Are there errors?
- Check whether your key pages answer common questions directly in one or two sentences.
- Ask an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Gemini a question about your service in your area. Is your business mentioned, and is the information accurate?
AI answers draw on clear, consistent information about your business across the web. Inaccurate or missing information is a sign to strengthen your website content, structured data and listings. See our guide to AEO for more.
How do you score your audit?
| Area | Healthy | Needs work |
|---|---|---|
| Indexing | All key pages indexed | Service pages missing or errors reported |
| Titles | Unique and descriptive | Duplicated or generic |
| Speed | Passes on mobile | Slow or failing Core Web Vitals |
| Content | One detailed page per service | Thin or combined pages |
| Local | Complete profile, recent reviews | Incomplete or inconsistent details |
| AI readiness | Schema plus direct answers | No structured data or FAQs |
What should you fix first?
Start with anything that stops pages being indexed, then thin or missing service pages, then speed, then local SEO and structured data. Indexing problems block everything else; service pages drive enquiries; speed affects every visitor.
How do you turn audit findings into an action plan?
Write every issue on one list, then mark each with two scores: impact (how much it affects enquiries) and effort (how hard it is to fix). Do high-impact, low-effort items this week, such as rewriting duplicate titles or completing your Google Business Profile. Schedule high-impact, high-effort items such as new service pages or speed improvements with your developer. Re-run the same one-hour audit in three months to confirm progress.
What does a DIY audit miss?
A one-hour check will not catch redirect chains, crawl budget issues, canonical errors, backlink problems, JavaScript rendering issues or detailed competitor gaps. If your audit raises several red flags, or traffic has dropped without an obvious cause, a professional audit is worth it.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How often should I audit my website's SEO?
Do a quick check monthly in Google Search Console and a fuller audit at least once a year, plus before and after any redesign.
Can I do an SEO audit without paid tools?
Yes. Google Search Console, PageSpeed Insights, the Rich Results Test and a site: search on Google cover the most important checks.
What is the most common SEO problem on small business websites?
Thin or combined service pages that do not target specific searches, followed by slow mobile loading and duplicate page titles.
Why does my business not appear in AI answers?
AI tools rely on clear, consistent information. Detailed service pages, FAQs, structured data and accurate listings make your business easier to understand and cite.
