For years, getting found online meant one thing: ranking in Google's list of results. Today people also get answers from featured snippets, voice assistants, Google's AI-generated overviews and chat tools like ChatGPT. New acronyms have followed: AEO and GEO. Here is what they mean, how they relate to SEO and how a Kenyan business should think about them.

What is SEO?

Search engine optimisation is the practice of improving your website so it ranks higher in search results for relevant searches. It covers technical health, page content, keywords, internal links, authority from other websites and local search through Google Business Profile. The outcome is visibility and clicks.

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimisation focuses on getting your content used as the answer. That includes featured snippets at the top of Google, "People also ask" boxes, voice assistant responses and AI-generated answers. AEO emphasises direct, concise answers to specific questions, clear structure, FAQs and structured data. The outcome is being the source an answer is built from, often with a citation.

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimisation is a newer term for making your brand and content likely to be cited or recommended by generative AI systems. These tools synthesise answers from many sources, so GEO emphasises clear facts about your business, consistent information across the web, authoritative content and mentions on trusted sites. In practice, GEO overlaps heavily with AEO, and many people use the terms interchangeably.

No. AI tools still rely on web content, much of which they discover and evaluate in ways similar to search engines. A site that is fast, well structured, accurate and authoritative is more likely to rank and more likely to be cited. AEO and GEO extend SEO rather than replace it. What has changed is that some searches now end without a click, so being visible in the answer matters alongside ranking below it.

What does AEO and GEO work look like in practice?

  1. Answer-first content: start key sections with a one or two sentence answer, then expand.
  2. Question-based headings that mirror how people ask, for example "How much does a website cost in Kenya?"
  3. FAQs on service pages and articles, with FAQ schema.
  4. Clear business facts: name, location, services, prices or price ranges, stated consistently on your site and listings.
  5. Structured data for your organisation, services, articles and FAQs.
  6. Authority: mentions and links from trusted, relevant sources.
  7. Freshness: keeping facts such as prices and services up to date.

Where should a Kenyan business invest first?

Start with the foundation that serves all three: a technically healthy site with one detailed page per service, accurate business information and a complete Google Business Profile. Then add answer-first content and FAQs for the questions your customers ask. Finally, build authority and monitor how AI tools describe your business. Treating SEO, AEO and GEO as one integrated strategy is more efficient than buying three separate services.

An example: one service, three kinds of visibility

Take a Nairobi company offering M-Pesa integration. SEO helps its service page rank when someone searches "M-Pesa integration for websites". AEO helps its article on "What is M-Pesa STK Push?" appear as the featured answer or in "People also ask". GEO helps an AI assistant, asked "Who can integrate M-Pesa into my online shop in Nairobi?", mention the company accurately because its website, listings and articles all state the same clear facts. One well-structured site supports all three.

How do you measure AI visibility?

There is no single report yet. Practical methods include asking AI tools common questions about your services and location each month and recording whether you are mentioned and described accurately, monitoring featured snippets in Search Console queries, and asking new customers how they found you. Accuracy matters as much as presence: if an AI tool states old prices or wrong locations, update your content and listings.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need separate SEO and AEO services?

Not usually. AEO builds on SEO foundations, so the most efficient approach is one integrated strategy covering both.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Organic AI answers cannot simply be bought. Visibility comes from clear, accurate, authoritative information about your business across the web.

Is GEO different from AEO?

GEO focuses specifically on generative AI tools, while AEO covers all answer formats including snippets and voice. In practice the tactics overlap heavily.

How long does AEO take to work?

Direct-answer formatting and schema can be picked up relatively quickly once pages are recrawled, but authority and consistent mentions build over months.
